Finley’s tips for a safe Halloween

WOW!!! It’s already October, and you know what that means? TRICK OR TREAT!   The young humans at my house seem to get really excited for this thing called Halloween! I’m not sure if I completely understand it, but for some reason, they get dressed up into some really funny clothes and they leave for a while and then come back with lots and lots of candy! I’ve noticed on this night, that the doorbell rings a lot, and I see lots of strange things at our front door. I’ve kinda gotten used to it over the years, but some of my friends find this particular night to be a little annoying, so I’d like to share with you some tips I’ve learned that help me get through this thing called HALLOWEEN!

Constant doorbell ringing can be stressful so keep your dog or cat in a different room or put up a baby gate to keep them away from the front door. I personally like to stay behind my baby gate because honestly, some of those costumes can look a little scary! Plus, if you make sure your pet is in a secure place, he’s not likely to try and dart out the front door, or worse, take a nip at a trick or treater.

Keep candles and pumpkins in a safe place because they can be a fire hazard, especially if your pet gets nervous by all the activity at the front door. My family likes to keep those glowing jack-o-lanterns on the front porch, but if you have one inside, make sure it’s in a place where your pet can’t knock it over. And please……make sure you blow out all your candles before you leave the house for trick or treating.

Don’t take your dog trick or treating because honestly, we don’t really like it! Like I said before, the costumes people wear can be a little scary and they also make, even the people we know, smell a little different than normal, so it’s really best to leave us home in a safe and secure place.

Costumes! Well, I for one don’t really mind wearing a costume, but some of my friends really don’t like them. So if your dog or cat does NOT like to wear a costume, by all means, don’t put one on them! If they do like a costume, make sure there’s nothing on the costume they can chew off and swallow that would hurt them. Also, make sure the costume is comfortable for them, because really, no one likes to wear things that aren’t comfortable.

Finally, make sure to keep the candy away from your pets! Most people know that chocolate is really bad for dogs and cats but did you know that there’s another thing in some candy called xylitol that’s also REALLY bad for us too?   So just make sure you keep the candy away from us and give us a few extra doggie treats for Halloween.

So, if you remember these tips I’ve shared, both you and your pet will have a very happy and pet-safe Halloween.

Until next time!
